Growing Chapter Overcomes the Odds

Best Buddies Florida
Not more than six months ago, Howard Middle School was a host site for peer buddies from a neighboring preparatory school. When the neighboring school decided to take a different direction, Howard Middle School was on its own. But what appeared to be the end of Howard Middle School’s Best Buddies’ chapter turned out to be just the beginning.
With no hesitation, Agatha Galan-Huertas, Howard’s Special Education Advisor, picked things up right where they left off. Ms. Galan-Huertas, together with Best Buddies’ staff, were able to recruit additional advisors and officers for the program, including now Faculty Advisor, Cuwana Lawson, and student leader, Morgan Lamp. Motivated to keep the chapter alive, the group set out to spread the word.
In little more than four months, the chapter is now fully functioning, self-sufficient, and on the move! In no time, five one-to-one friendships have been formed, with several others in the works. Not only is the chapter meeting its requirements, but they are hosting a variety of activities during and after school. The chapter has even begun to complete projects that are displayed in the school’s halls. This not only raises awareness, but is getting other students excited about Best Buddies.
Howard Middle School has exemplified a chapter springing from the ground up and Best Buddies Orlando is looking forward to seeing their growth continue. |
